Portlaoise’s dreams of All-Ireland Feile glory were dashed on Sunday, as a formidable St Brigid’s outfit claimed the Division 1 title by nine points.

Portlaoise 0-0

Having already accounted for the champions of Kerry, Galway and Kildare en route to the final Portlaoise must have been in confident mood but this Brigid’s side was a step too far and they slipped to a disappointing defeat on their home patch.

Right from the outset this was only heading one way as Brigid’s speedy forward Tiernan McGlynn seized control of proceedings with three quick fire points that set the tone for the rest of the game.

Hampered by some poor shooting and uncharacteristically erratic passing, Portlaoise failed to register a single score in the opening half, and it was more of the same after the restart as St Brigid’s ruthlessly cut through the hosts time and again. Portlaoise defender Brian Sheehy did extremely well to keep Michael Courtney’s low shot from crossing the line early in the half but that proved only a brief reprieve for the O’Moore men.

With just over ten minutes remaining Mark Donnelly was on hand to gather the rebound after Portlaoise keeper Niall Gleeson had clawed away a looping ball and once Donnelly drove the ball into the roof of the home net the game was over as a contest.

Portlaoise tried gallantly to register at least a consolation score or two on the board but even that privilege was denied them by the impregnable Brigid’s rearguard, while at the other end the Dubliners picked off a series of well worked points to underline their dominance.

The sound of referee Joe Brennan’s final whistle brought the curtain down on this year’s Feile na nOg finals and sparked jubilant scenes pitch-side as the large travelling Dublin crowd enveloped their young heroes amidst a sea of red and white.
