Campion goal completes St Joseph’s comeback against The Rock
St Joseph’s recovered from a poor first half to nick a hard-fought win that sees them advance to the quarter-final stages at the expense of a Rock side who let their opponents off the hook when they seemed primed to pull off something of a surprise in O’Moore Park on Sunday afternoon.
Laois Senior Football Championship
St Joseph’s 1-11
The Rock 0-10
Joe’s would have been most people’s tip to advance directly to the last eight of the championship but for the majority of the game it was The Rock who were the better side until a late show from the Kellyville men stole the win.
Having drawn level through David Murphy’s excellent score The Rock stepped up to the mark and rattled another four points over the bar without response to leave the pre-match favourites trailing 0-7 to 0-3 at the interval.
Three points without reply in a ten minute spell in the second-half cut The Rock’s lead to a single point before the game’s telling moment ended The Rock’s brave resistance. They had lost their shape as well as their concentration and that allowed Noel Garvan to end up one on one under a high ball with The Rock keeper Terrence Conlon. The ball broke free and Jason Campion was the first to react to smash the ball into an empty net with seven minutes remaining.
Two minutes later Campion was on the scoreboard again and their comeback was complete when an insurance point from Noel Garvan brough the curtain down on an entertaining encounter.
