Dan the man as Camross go through

editorial image

SIX points from Dan Lalor including two in the closing stages when the game was on the line proved the key scores as Camross came from six points down at half-time to pull out a remarkable win that secures their place in the quarter-finals.

For Clonad it was yet again a case of what might have been as for the second game in a row they let a commanding half-time lead slip through their fingers.

With ten points on the board at the break to just four for their opponents, Clonad looked to be in control of the game and they were full value for that advantage at the interval. In fact it could easily have been more had a penalty just before the break been drilled to the back of the net instead of over the bar.

The sides were evenly matched in the opening exchanges slotting over three points apiece but Clonad gradually took control and they outscored Camross by 0-7 to 0-1 for the remainder of the half.

Seoirse Conroy was the scorer in chief on the day for Clonad and he accounted for six of the first-half points with Martin Norton weighing in with three in the opening 30 minutes. Conroy also had the chance from the penalty after Ross Gill was taken down but he slotted it over the bar.

That put four between the sides and two further scores before the half gave Clonad a comfortable and deserved lead.

Unfortunately for Clonad, sometimes lightning does strike twice and after falling foul of a Colt fightback in their previous game, this time they endured the same fate at the hands of Camross who slowly clawed their way back into the game.

Clonad still looked to have the game in hand however entering the final quarter but a decisive and well directed flick from substitute Greg Cuddy directed a free to the back of the net and suddenly Clonad were in trouble.

With time ticking down, Camross had managed to get back on level terms and with the game in the balance it was Dan Lalor who stepped up to the plate pucking over two late points to seal the win for Camross and leave Clonad yet again to wonder what might have been.
