Darragh O'Se bid likely to fail

Laois GAA officials approached Kerry legend Darragh O Sé last week about the possibility of him filling the vacant senior football manager's position, but it looks unlikely that anything will come of it as the search continues for a replacement for Sean Dempsey.

Laois officials decided to pursue O S on the basis of his experience as a player after he was suggested to them and they met him in the Castletroy Hotel in Limerick on Thursday to outline their ideas.

However despite reports that O S impressed in the meeting, it's thought that O S isn't interested in taking on the job. So far he's the only candidate that has been interviewed.

O S only retired from inter-county football last year and has no managerial experience but his stature in the game ensured that he would still constitute a high-profile appointment.

He has maintained a busy media profile since his retirement, writing a column for the Irish Times and he is also due to release his autobiography for the Christmas market.

Laois GAA chairman Brian Allen wouldn't rule out O S completely when contacted by the Leinster Express on Monday but says that the process of appointing a manager in both football and hurling is still "in its infancy".

"We are currently trying to establish who is interested and we'll talk to them but we're just moving one step at a time and we have to balance it. Nominations close this weekend and we'll take everything in to consideration then."

The football and hurling committees both met the full executive on Monday night for a briefing and the county board will be taking nomination for both managerial vacancies until the end of this week.

It is expected that Pat Roe will be nominated once more for the position but as of Monday, there was no nomination in for Luke Dempsey, who has been tipped for the position and was nominated for the role two years ago.

And following Mick O'Dwyer's nomination by former county board chairman Dick Miller last week, the current officials will now try and sound out the Waterville man to see if he's interested. O'Dwyer has repeatedly declined to comment despite saying he's keen to stay on in management but not with Wicklow.
