Laois county champions, Emo, made their exit from the provincial championships on Sunday afternoon at the hands of the Louth champions, O’Connell’s, on a margin of seven points in a tense encounter in O’Moore Park.

Leinster Club IFC Championship

Emo 0-12

O’Connell’s (Louth) 2-13

.

Emo made a strong start and an Costello free after fourteen minutes completed an immense opening quarter from the Laois club which saw them hold a four point lead.

O’Connell’s quickly found their feet and broke Emo’s momentum with a fortunate goal. O’Connell’s drew level minutes later and with nineteen minutes elapsed, the travelling side took the lead for the first time in the game and by the break they were two clear.

Emo restarted the half on a positive note with Evan Costello converting a free just a minute into the half to cut the margin to a point with the half left to play. O’Connell’s quicly followed suit but went a step further and notched 1-1 in two minutes to stun the the opposition.

Emo were playing against the breeze for the second half and slowly losing their grip on the game, but points from substitute Ray Ryan and Paul Lalwor steadied the ship somewhat to leave the margin at a single goal with fifteen minutes remaining.

Emo tried to bridge the gap but every time they would land a score O’Connell’s would briskly follow as they eased into a seven point victory.
