Fortunate Dublin goal key as All Ireland challenge ends for Laois

A hugely fortunate goal for Dublin from Michael Daragh Macauley just before half-time proved the pivotal score as the defending All Ireland champions just saw off the challenge of Laois in Croke Park on Saturday night.

All Ireland SFC Quarter Finals

Dublin 1-12

Laois 0-12

There was nothing between the sides in the opening half as the side’s went toe to toe and Laois proved more than a match for their highly fancied opponents however Macauley’s goal proved pivotal.

He had been attempting to handpass the ball over the bar but it took a slight deflection off John O’Loughlin and dropped into the back of the Laois net. O’Loughlin had worked very hard to get back to cover the full-forward and was very unlucky to see the ball go in off his slight touch.

Dublin came out strong at the start of the second-half and looked to be pulling but Laois showed great resolve and they kept in touch with points from frees from Colm Kelly and Ross Munnelly.

However at the other end Dublin kept the scoreboard ticking over and a ‘45 from Stephen Cluxton, his third point of the game, put Dublin three ahead in injury-time.

Time ran out probably sooner than it should have for Laois as the referee, despite 10 second-half substitutions alone, incredibly only played a single minute of inury-time and most of that was taken up by Stephen Cluxton’s late ‘45.
