Goal glut steers Ladies past battling Tyrone

A three-goal salvo in the space of nine minutes just after half time proved to be the key for the Laois Ladies on Sunday afternoon, as they picked up the first win of their 2012 league campaign against Tyrone in Portarlington.
Laois 3-10
Tyrone 1-11
Having opened with a disappointing five point defeat against Monaghan the week before, manager Joe Higgins was no doubt looking for a response from his side, and it eventually came early in the second half. The opening period was a nip and tuck affair, with no more than two points between the sides at any stage and Tyrone looking dangerous when they got within shooting distance of the Laois goal.
The home side only really clicked in the second half, with Grace Weston slotting home a goal within twenty seconds of the throw in, and Laois added another 2-2 before Tyrone knew what was going on.
Perhaps inevitably they failed to keep that kind of scoring run going, and Tyrone did come back and make life awkward for Laois in the closing stages. Even at that, Laois were full value for the win, and they can welcome Donegal this weekend in high spirits as they hope to build a run which would see them qualify for a second Division 1 final in succession.
