Goals win it for Gaelscoil

Three late goals for Gaelscoil Portlaoise finally put them beyond the reaches of a gallant Castlecuffe side in the last of the Cumann na mBunscol finals played on Thursday.

Oisin Keating put Castlecuffe ahead after just four minutes with a point, but Liam Óg de Brún hit back with a goal within seconds. Castlecuffe weren’t too concerned though, and points from Aaron Dunne and Eoin Conroy put them back on level terms.

Liam Óg de Brún and Robert Downey traded points before Gaelscoil got their second goal after a mix up in the Castlecuffe defence. Cian Ó hUallachán the hit Gaelscoil’s third goal with a nice finish, and Liam Óg de Brún hit two points either side of a goal from Castlecuffe’s Robert Downey to leave just two goals between the team at half time, 3-4 to 1-4.

The second half was as good as any half of football played in O’Moore Park over the two days, with both teams getting some wonderful scores.

Castlecuffe hit three points in a row from Eoin Conroy, Robert Downey and Aaron Dunne to leave three in it, and Castlecuffe’s defence then managed a magnificent treble save to deny Gaelscoil a goal.

Liam Óg de Brún did another goal for them however, but Castlecuffe ket hitting points and with five minutes to go only two points separated the teams. That was as close as it got though, and three goals in the last few minutes sealed the win.
