Harps make it five alive

The Harps 1-12

St Brigid's 2-5

The Harps have controlled the Laois Camogie scene recently, winning the last four championships and on Saturday last in Abbeyleix they beat St Brigid's to claim the much sought after five-in-a-row.

In the early stages of the game, both sides struggled to settle, and the game was being played at a very high tempo. It only took 35 seconds for Angela Hanlon to open the scoring for The Harps and this was quickly added to by Elaine Mahony from centre field.

St Brigid's managed to open their scoring tally through midfielder Denise Delaney and the first goal attempt came in tenth minute when Brigid's were denied by the goal keeping skills of Helen Keane between the Harps posts.

Brigid's levelled the game when Emer Delaney pointed her free but Aine Mahony matched this for The Harps, then Louise Mahony put The Harps two clear with a massive free. However Brigid's levelled the game again thanks to a free from Emer Delaney and a point from Sharon Moylan and Brigid's then took a big step towards ending The Harps reign as the Queens of Laois Camogie when Noreen Kirwan flicked the sliotar passed Helen Keane into the Harps net.

The Harps pulled back two points thanks to Louise Mahony however on the brink of the half time break Brigid's went further in front when Patricia Bergin goaled.

Into the second half The Harps began to close back the gap with points from Louise Mahony and Aisling Phelan. Indeed Brigid's began to collapse as they could only manage two points after the break, both frees from Emer Delaney.

The Harps got right back into the game when Lorraine Treacy goaled her ground strike. This was quickly followed by two more Louise Mahony frees.

Emer Delaney sent a 21 yard free over the bar to leave only three between the sides. However the ever reliable Louise Mahony put the gap back to four when she pointed yet another free. Brigids had one more opportunity before the end, when they were awarded another twenty one yard free. Goalkeeper Laura Dunne was brought up to take it, however her blasted shot was stopped on the line and The Harps hung on to win their fifth Laois Camogie title.
