Healy to miss Laois hurlers clash with Carlow
Portlaoise dual star Cahir Healy will miss out on the Laois senior hurlers game with Carlow this weekend as he focusses his attentions on the footballers clash with Longford on Sunday.
Healy had committed to both football and hurling panels this year, but had featured mostly with footballers as they battled to stay in Division 1 of the NFL.
Hopes among the hurling fraternity in the county were raised when he played against Wexford in the relegation playoff, performing superbly at corner back, but with less than 24 hours between the throw in times of both games this weekend, he will only be involved with Justin McNulty’s squad this weekend.
Sticking with teams news, and Laois welcomed back Padraig McMahon from his round-the-world trip last Friday night when he played in the practice game against Offaly which was organised as part of the official opening of the new Mountmellick GAA clubhouse.
McMahon was introduced at half time and looked sharp on his return to the fold, but McNulty hinted at last Thursday night’s open night for fans and media that this weekend’s game may come too soon for him. There were also slight injury concerns over Colm Begley and Padraig Clancy, but both are expected to be fit to take to the field on Sunday.
For Teddy McCarthy, the injury list is much more substantial than that of his footballing counterpart, with Dayne Peacock added to the list of absentees after he picked up a hand injury in work, and he is defnitely out for this weekend.
Added to that are Joe Fitzpatrick’s withdrawal from the panel on medical advice and the long term absences of Brian Campion and John Brophy. Campion has only recently taken his first steps back to fitness after injury ruled him out of the entire league campaign, while Brophy has struggled to overcome a broken bone in his hand, as he continued to play after suffering the injury without realising the full extent of the damage.
It is hoped he will be in a position to re-join the panel after Saturday’s game, where Laois are currently at 8/13 in the betting with Paddy Power, while Carlow are 6/4. Throw in on Saturday night is 7pm.
The footballers are also being viewed as slight favourites, where they are currently listed at 5/6, with Longford at 11/8. Throw in on Sunday is at 3.30pm.
