Heywood hit the ground running

Heywood CS got their Leinster Colleges SHC 'B' campaign off to a good start last Wednesday when they easily got the better of Naas CBS.

In wet conditions in the Naas GAA grounds, Heywood struggled somewhat in the opening half but still managed to take a 0-8 to 1-4 lead in to the break - their scores coming from the impressive Kevin Kelly, who hit four, Timahoe's Robbie Foyle, Eoin Clancy and Ryan Peacock.

W Gorry struck for Naas' goal midway through the half but Heywood felt aggrieved as they had two goals disallowed before half-time. A torrential downpour at the start of the second half did little for the playing conditions but Heywood now had the benefit of a considerable breeze and they soon began to pull away.

Kelly and Foyle added some fine scores and with the Heywood midfield and half backline on top, they totally dominated the second half.

Best players for Heywood were Ryan Peacock, David Maloney, Ricky Nolan, Robbie Foyle and Kevin Kelly.

Both teams now have two group games remaining to see who will advance to the knockout stages.

SCORERS - Heywood CS: Kevin Kelly 2-8 (0-5 frees), Robbie Foyle 0-8, Oisin Carroll 1-0, Ryan Peacock 0-2 (both frees), Ricky Nolan and Eoin Clancy 0-1 each; Naas CBS: W Gorry 1-0, C O'Rourke 0-3 (all frees), D Dunne 0-2
