Laois back on track after crucial win over Galway

At the fourth attempt, Laois senior footballers finally picked up their second win of the 2013 NFL Division 2 campaign with a much improved display against Galway on Saturday night.

After a disappointing two-point loss Westmeath the week before, Laois knew that if they were to have any real chance of making a push for promotion, then a win over Galway was a must.

Gary Walsh thumped a ball to the back of the Galway net after just 32 seconds, and Galway offered little to suggest thereafter that they could bridge the early gap between the teams.

Galway hit back with a free from Michael Martin, but less than a minute later a long-ball from Darren Strong set Ross Munnelly up for his first point. Another exchange of points from both teams meant the goal remained between the teams after ten minutes of play.

A full nine minutes of play would pass before another score was registered, as Galway got to within two with a point from Gary Sice. That sparked an impressive run from Laois, starting with two pointed frees in a minute from Gary Walsh, both of which were brought forward ten yards because of some verbals from the Galway defence. Padraig Clancy added another before Michael Martin and Ross Munnelly traded points to put Laois 1-6 to 0-4 ahead.

Galway managed a quick brace of points but MJ Tierney’s late free meant Laois four points to spare at the interval. MJ Tierney (free) and Gary Walsh pointed in the first four minutes of the second-half and while Galway offered sight of a brief comeback through a couple of Paul Conroy frees, Laois responded with a three point haul to all but kill off the game.
