Laois GAA finances remain strong in tough times
Laois GAA’s finances remained strong in 2012, despite the overall income for the County Committee dropping by almost €47,000.
Expenditure was reduced by €7,000, but the county was able to return an overall profit as income from O’Moore Park increased by €26,804 from the 2011 figure.
There were a number of cost-saving measures taken throughout the year, most notably in the area of Coaching and Games, where expenditure dropped by an incredible €54,824. Most of this drop was in the area of Coaching and Juvenile Expenses, with a Treasurer Martin Byrne confirming that a change in policy in the club-school link had played a big part in leading to the drop. He did confirm, however, that he expects the level of spending on Coaching and Games to rise again in the future.
Elsewhere, County Team Administration expenses continues to be the biggest expenditure of Laois GAA’s money, with the amount spent on Laois’ teams rising by €60,003 from the 2011 total to an overall €566,639. The extended run of the senior footballers in the All-Ireland qualifiers, as well as the minor and U-21 hurlers, lead to the increase. Most of the rises were in three particular areas of spending, with Players Travelling Expenses rising by €13,124, Sportsgear, Equipment and Laundry up €14,794 and Medical Expenses, including Physiotherapy, seeing the biggest jump at €18,901.
Up to €40,000 of the additional costs were offset by an increase in monies paid out by Central Council, Leinster Council and the Fight Night fundraiser organised by the senior hurlers and footballers.
O’Moore Park remains a big earner for Laois also, particularly for intercounty games, with rent for the grounds up by over €20,000 from the year before. However, there was a large drop off in income from club championship games.
The senior football final this year took in €10,485 less than the 2011 final, while the income for matches played outside of senior football and hurling semi-finals and finals dropping by over €35,000, down from €191,356 last year to €155,525 this year. Match Expenses did drop as well, with a fall of €23,279.
