Laois Ladies lose 100% record with defeat to Dublin

The Laois Ladies Senior Footballers lost their 100% in Division 1 of the Tesco Homegrown Ladies National Football League when they were beaten 2-6 to 1-7 in Stradbally by Dublin.
Tom McKittrick’s side were in the driver’s seat for much of the game but the concession of crucial goals at crucial times proved Laois’ undoing as Dublin came back to record the win. Dublin were twice reduced to 14 players as captain Sinead Finnegan and Noelle Healy were yellow-carded but the ‘Jackies’, with Paul Gilheaney in place as interim manager, still managed to dig out a crucial win.
Laois remain in a four way tie at the top of the table on six points ahead of a crucial home game with Mayo on March 3. Mayo have won two from two so far making it a vital game for Laois if they are to remain in the hunt for a league title this year.
Laois started the game brightly and moved into an early 0-2 to 0-0 lead but Dublin, looking to bounce back from a shock defeat against Donegal, soon found their stride and were level by the midway point of the first half.
However in the next eight minutes, Laois rattled off three unanswered points to move into the lead and at that stage things were going well for the home side.
Unfortunately for Laois, they were caught out before half-time with Dublin hitting a quickfire 1-1 to move into the lead for the first time with the goal coming from Lyndsey Davey after 28 minutes.
Laois responded before the break with a point to level the scores and the sides went to the dressing rooms locked together at Laois 0-6 Dublin 1-3.
Dublin drew first blood in the second-half with a point before Laois stormed back into the lead with a goal from Ciara Burke nine minutes after the restart.
At this stage Laois were in the ascendancy and extended their lead to 1-7 to 1-4 but as happened in the first half, Dublin responded when Laois looked like pulling clear.
A goal from Hannah Tyrell midway through the half levelled matters again undoing all the hard work Laois had put in early in the half.
Scores were at a premium for the remainder of the game but the two key scores, the only scores in the final quarter, came from the boot of Dublin’s Sinead Aherne as she pointed two frees which secured the win for the visitors.
