LAOIS LADIES U-14 FC - Conleth's claim first title

St Conleths picked up their first Laois Ladies U-14 'A' championship title when they proved too strong for Portlaoise in Timahoe in the final on Sunday.

St Conleths 3-6

Portlaoise 2-3

The north Laois side led from start to finish and were generally in control against a Portlaoise outfit that never threw in the towel and battled on until the bitter end, staging a great fight back before they finally succumbed.

In the opening half Portlaoise could make little inroads against a tight marking Conleths defence and only registered their first score just before the half time whistle. In the mean time St Conleth's had chalked up a goal and three points to leave the half time score at 1-3 to 0-1.

After the break St Conleth's continued where they left off before the interval and added two points and another goal early in the second-half to take a very commanding ten point lead. It looked over and out at that stage, but Portlaoise had different ideas.

They came storming back, found another gear and proceeded to take the fight to their opponents. Amanda Bland cracked home a penalty and Dooley and O'Neill picked off a couple of points. Suddenly it was 'game on'.

It was then that St Conleths, who had earlier in the year defeated Portlaoise in the File Final, showed their experience and they again pulled away and saw off the challenge, going on to win with six points to spare.
