Laois rout Roscommon in Camogie League opener

The Laois Camogie team made a fine start to their campaign on Sunday with an 18 point rout of Roscommon in Mountmellick.
Roscommon were first to score with a point from a free scored by Kelley Hopkins but almost immediately Laois responded with a point from full forward Niamh Dollard who is back on the team after taking a year out.
Louise Mahony pointed two frees before she scored a point from play and Olga Parkinson added two more points for Laois to put them ahead by five points after 16 minutes of play. Sile Burke scored a point from 40 yards to increase the home sides lead.

On the 25 minutes Twice Soaring Star recipient Sarah-Anne Fitzgerald scored a point from a 45 and Louise Mahony scored the final score before the break to leave Laois 0-9 to 0-1 ahead.

The second half began with a bit of a resurgence from the Rossies and Susan Spillane scored a point in the second minute. However that was as good as it got for the visitors as Laois wing forward Olga Parkinson got on the end of a loose ball a made no mistake in rattling the Roscommon net.

Laois were in total control again.
Louise Mahony added another point to Laois’ tally from a free and Sarah Anne Fitzgerald added another from play to leave the score at 1-10 to 0-2 in favour of Laois.

Full forward Niamh Dollard then scored a lovely goal to stretch the home advantage even further.
Niamh Coyle pulled a score back with a point for Roscommon on the 47th minute but that was quickly cancelled out by Louise Mahony

In the closing minutes Laois added a third goal through Yvonne O’Neill but this was answered by a scrambled goal from Roscommon’s full forward Annette McGeeney.

Every member of the Laois squad played to a high standard especially Sarah Anne Fitzgerald, Captain Catriona Downey and Claire Walsh in the backs, Eimear Delaney at mid-field and Olga Parkinson, Niamh Dollard and Louise Mahony in the forwards.
