Laois to remain in McCarthy Cup

Laois senior hurlers will compete in the Liam McCarthy Cup for 2013, after chairman Brian Allen confirmed the county will not be accepting the invite to compete in the Christy Ring Cup.
The potential drop to the second tier of intercounty hurling was looming over Laois in recent weeks, with Croke Park having written to the county offering them a place in the competition.
With only eight players then turning up to an important players meeting with Seamas Plunkett and Paul Cuddy, it then made the drop incerasingly likely. Both Cuddy and Plunkett opted to meet with the players in smaller groups in a bid to get their thoughts on the problems and possible solutions for the problems facing Laois senior hurling, and the initial findings of those subsequent meetings with the players has meant that the county will not now choose to relegate themselves.
“The decision was that we would stay in it (the Liam McCarthy Cup) unless something drastic came out of the meetings” revealed Allen on Monday, as he also confirmed that Plunkett and Cuddy have now concluded their meetings with players.
They will now compile their report of their findings from all of the meetings held with the player groups, and Allen hopes that the document will be ready by the end of the weekend.
After that, it will be discussed at a meeting of the Laois executive before any recommendations are acted on.
A search for a new senior manager is expected to begin almost immediately, with it hoped that Plunkett will also be involved in that process as well.
At U-21 level, Tony Doran should be ratified at the next meeting of the county board, with his appointment having been delayed at September’s meeting, pending the outcome of the report which is due to be filed.
