Laois started life under the guidance of Teddy McCarthy with a hard-earned two point victory on Saturday afternoon, as they needed extra time to finally see off the challenge of DIT in Rathdowney.

Laois 3-13

DIT 2-14

(after extra time)

The margin of victory, or indeed the opposition against which it was achieved, are not the most prestigious, but that’s not really important in January. This games wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t convincing, but it was heartening.

It was heavy going for long spells, with plenty of bunching and not too much flowing hurling, but in difficult conditions they stuck to the task and were good value for the victory in the end.

As is the norm for this time of year, there is plenty of room for improvement. Laois haven’t much work done on fitness and hurling as they bid to whittle down a panel of well over 40 to workable numbers.
