Leinster action continues for Laois handballers

The Leinster handball championships continued this week with a number of Laois players in action.

In the Junior B doubles championship, Joe Brennan and Michael Donovan made a positive start to their Leinster campaign with victory over Barry Ramsey and David Deane of Carlow 21-10 21-11. This was an encouraging display from the Laois pairing who now face a tricky tie against Wexford in the next round.

In the Junior championships there was little joy for Laois as both our pairings in this grade made early exists from this year’s competition. Andrew Dowling and Peter Whelan were defeated by Darren O’Toole and Malachy Whelan on a scoreline of 21-12 21-12 while Ray Fogarty and Tómas Lennon lost in a close encounter to Dara Ward and PJ McGrath 21-15 21-20.

In the Masters B singles there was some consolation for Ray Fogarty who had an impressive opening round victory against Gary Bolger of Kildare. Ray dominated throughout winning the match 21-8 21-7. Ray now goes on to face John Roche of Wexford in his next game.

There was no joy for Mick Fogarty who after losing his first game 21-8 to Gavin Grace of Kildare, made an encouraging start to the second game building up a 16-6 lead. Unfortunately, Mick couldn’t sustain this effort and eventually lost the game 21-18.

In the Golden Masters, Paddy Donovan got his Leinster campaign off to the perfect start with victory over Jimmy Purcell of Kilkenny. He now faces Mick Dowling of Kildare in Garryhill (Carlow) next Thursday in what promises to be one of the games of the week between two very experienced and highly-skilled players.
