LEINSTER MINOR FINAL - Laois lose out in extra time

Laois lost the Leinster minor camogie final after extra time in Raheen last Saturday when Offaly finished strongest to finally decide a gripping final.

Offaly 4-9

Laois 2-6

Laois won the final last year when they beat Meath in the final but Offaly provided much sterner opposition and from an early stage it was evident that that was going to be a tough contest.

Points from Mary Nevin and Debbie Flynn got Offaly off to a good start but Laois slowly worked their way into contention and with sharpshooter Sile Burke on target from placed balls, Laois were soon level.

A defensive lapse let Offaly's Mary Nevin in for the game's first goal and further points from Orlagh Kirwan and Debbie Flynn helped Offaly to a half time lead of 1-4 to 0-2.

With wind advantage in the second half, Laois got off to a brilliant start when Kelly O'Neill fired an unstoppable effort past Shauna Carroll in the Offaly goal. A couple more efforts from Sile Burke had the sides level by the 43rd minute.

Offaly regained the lead with points from Flynn and an Orlagh Kirwan goal looked like settling the tie in Offaly's favour. But Sile Burke was again on target for Laois and a well-taken goal from Ciara Carroll had the sides level as the clock ticked down.

Both sides missed chances to snatch the game in normal time and when extra time eventually got underway, after Offaly voiced their fears over fading light, they got their third goal when Kate Dooley put Offaly into a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game. Sile Burke replied with a free but that was Laois' last score as a fourth Offaly goal from Claire Nevin and points from Debbie Flynn sealed the win for Offaly.
