McHugh leads Ballyfin to impressive win in Palmer Cup

Ballyfin produced one of the shock results of the year to date in the Palmer Cup over the weekend, as John Joe McHugh’s late free gave them a one point win over Rathdowney-Errill.
McHugh won a late free, which he pointed himself, to cap off a fine individual performance for him. It was his first half goal which helped Ballyfin into a 1-9 to 0-9 half time lead, and in a well-contested second-half Rathdowney-Errill thought they had done enough to at least get a draw from the game, before McHugh settled it in Ballyfin’s favour.
Elsewhere in the Palmer Cup, holders The Harps had seven points to spare over Castletown-Slieve Bloom, who have struggled somewhat so far this year, with Michael Lanigan in good scoring form for the Durrow men.
In the last of the Palmer Cup games played over the last week, Camross had a hat-trick from Dean Delaney to thank as they saw off Portlaoise by eleven points in Camross.
St Fintan’s Mountrath maintained their 100% record in ACHL Division 2 thanks to a comfortable win over Clonaslee St Manman’s.
Mountrath are the only side to have won all six games in the Division, although Borris-Kilcotton remain hot on their heels, just one point behind in second place after five wins and one draw.
Borris-Kilcotton kept up the pressure on Mountrath with a six point win over Shanahoe, 2-12 to 1-9, who themselves remain in midtable after four victories. Rathdowney-Errill also enjoyed a six point win over Clonad, whose inconsistent form continues to hamper their assault on the upper reaches of the table.
Having defeated Colt in their previous outing, Clonad couldn’t replicate that form on Saturday evening, as Rathdowney-Errill’s second string proved too strong on their home patch, with Eoin Fitzpatrick turning in a fine performance at centre-back. Enda Norton lead the charge for Clonad from full-forward, but it was to be vain as Rathdowney-Errill moved to within three points of Mountrath at the top of the table.
The struggles of Park-Ratheniska continued in the Division also, as they lost out to Rosenallis on a 3-11 to 3-8 scoreline, as they still await a first win of the year. They are joined at the bottom of the table by Clonaslee and The Harps, all three of which have lost all six of their games so far.
In the last of Saturday night’s games, Trumera and Camross played out a thriller in Trumera, with the visitors eventually edging home on a scoreline of 3-12 to 2-13. A full round of ACHL Division 2 games will take place tonight (Wednesday), see fixtures section for further details.
