Minors score historic win over Offaly
Laois players celebrate after the final whistle sounds and they snatch victory from the jaws of defeat when they beat Offaly in the Electric Ireland Leinster Minor Hurling Championship quarter-final in O'Connor Park, Tullamore. Picture: Ger Rogers/HR Photo.
The Laois minor hurlers claimed one of the most impressive and heartening victories in recent Laois GAA history with a three point win over Offaly on Saturday night.
The win was Laois’ first against Offaly at this level since 1972, and it was achieved in the most dramatic of circumstances, with Aaron Moore’s fantastic late goal sealing the win with the last puck of the game.
Speaking afterwards, a delighted Seamas Plunkett praied the mental strength of his squad. “What probably pleased me most was pulling back the 3 point lead point by point and against the wind. They had to dig really deep to do that and then to win the game by scoring the goal with seconds left showed real character and focus for winning the game. We toughened it out when the game was on the line.”
Victory here means Laois qualify for the semi-finals of the Leinster championship, where they will meet Wexford on June 24, the same weekend as the Feile na nOg, which is being held in Laois, and both Leinster SHC semi-finals, which are also taking place in O’Moore Park. As it stands it is expected that the game will take place in Wexford Park, but the official fixture will be confirmed closer to the time.
