New hurling boss ‘in a few weeks’
Laois GAA chairman Brian Allen has said that the county hope to have a new senior hurling manager appointed “in the next few weeks” as the process of replacing Teddy McCarthy continues.
Allen revealed that Seamas ‘Cheddar’ Plunkett and Paul Cuddy, who are working in conjunction with the county executive in identifying and appointing a new manager, have moved on to “phase two” of their process, which will see them approach potential candidates to gauge their level of interest.
It is almost a month and a half since the initial meeting Plunkett and Cuddy called with the players, which drew just eight attendees, as they have taken their time to meet with players since then and take on board as many views as possible.
While the process is taking time, Allen has not put a definite time limit on making an appointment. “We’re not rushing into it, we’re going to do it as right as we can. We have a list, but it hasn’t been shortened yet.”
Allen refused to either give the names or the amount of people on the list, with initial conversations with those in consideration intended to determine the level of interest in the position.
One name widely expected to be on it is Clough-Ballacolla manager John McEvoy, who already has intercounty experience having guided the Dublin U-21s to an All-Ireland final in 2011 and prior to that, being involved with the Dublin Colleges side that won an All-Ireland in 2006. He was also part of Anthony Daly’s back room team this year.
There was a move towards having a Laois man in charge once again after consecutive outside managers failed to yield any success on the playing field.
Elsewhere, it is also expected that U-21 hurling management team will be confirmed at the same time as the senior manager. Tony Doran has indicated his desire to stay on after reaching a Leinster final this year, but Allen confirmed they will wait to appoint a senior manager to see if there is any scope for a link-up between the management teams of both panels.
