Phelan scores hat-trick in thriller

Naomh Eamann marked the end of a highly successful U-12 season with a stellar performance in O’Moore Park on Sunday morning to overcome a strong Camross side.

Naomh Eamann were on-form from the outset and opened their account with less than a minute on the clock, with corner-forward Joe Phelan finding the target from a very acute angle to chalk down the first point of the game.

Ciaran Conroy followed this up as he landed a huge point from the half way line, before confidently slotting a long range free two minutes later to give Naomh Eamann an early three point advantage.

The opposing midfielders, Eoin Dowling and Aaron Gaughan, exchanged points midway through the half with Dowling registering Camross’ first point of the day with a well-struck free to set them in motion.

Naomh Eamann were proving to be clinical on the day as they began to rack up point after point with Ciaran Conroy (4), Joe Phelan and Conor Breen all adding to referee Michael Ward’s scorecard as they held a nine point lead at the interval.

It took six minutes into the restart for the first score to arrive with Camross’ Eoin Dowling claiming his second point of the day to give Camross a positive start to the second half. Naomh Eamann replied in devastating fashion to clinch the first goal of the game from Joe Phelan.

Aaron Gaughan followed this up with his second point of the afternoon, before Naomh Eamann found the net for the second time in two minutes with Joe Phelan grabbing his second goal of the day.

Camross began to stage a comeback with 1-1 in four minutes from Eoin Dowling, as well as a point from Liam Delaney to put a dent in the Naomh Eamann lead with three minutes remaining. Naomh Eamann finished strongly with Ciaran Conroy adding his seventh point, before Joe Phelan sent his shot across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner to complete his hat-trick. Camross’ Liam Delaney grabbed his second point of the day in injury time to see out the game.
