In a hard-fought final game in the weekend’s first round of fixtures, Portarlington did just enough to keep a gritty Clonaslee St Manmans side at bay and book their place in the winners round where the mighty Portlaoise wait in store.

Sparrow Insurances Laois Senior Football Championship

Portarlington 0-14

Clonaslee St Manmans 1-7

.

The Port men dominated for large chunks of the game and seemed to be in line for a relatively comfortable win before a typically dogged Clonaslee side dug deep and clawed their way back into contention after the break only to fall short at the death in this scrappy but entertaining encounter.

Clonaslee would have come in as the underdogs given their poor championship form last year but they showed a lot more promise in the early stages this time around and they took an early lead through a neatly struck Michael Murray free.
