SOUTH LEINSTER COLLEGES SH 'C' FINAL - Poor start scuppers Conaslee

Three early goals from Scoil Mhuire Clane ended this hurling final as Clonaslee VS were unable to recover from those setbacks in the opening half of the encounter.

Scoil Mhuire, Clane 3-16

Clonaslee VS 1-7

Clane were ahead 3-0 to 0-0 after just ten minutes when Declan Flaherty and Bernard Day (2) saw their efforts find the back of the net. It was a crushing blow for the Clonaslee team as they travelled to Naas in high hopes of winning this crown.

But their day was always going to be difficult as they failed to score until the 27th minute of the clash. By then it was all over bar the shouting as Scoil Mhuire had already put 3-5 on the board.

The height of Kevin Connor in midfield was daunting for Clonaslee as time after time he fielded some wonderful ball. He was also to chip in with an opening half point, while Mark Delaney and Day were also to push their side further ahead.

However, the Laois school did get two points before half time, from Barry White but they trailed 3-7 to 0-2 at the break. A goal from PJ Fitzpatrick did restore some pride in the second half but their was to be no way back as Bernard Day and Hugh Gifney continued to send over scores for the winners.

To their credit the second half was a much improved Clonaslee performance with Sen Larkin, Paddy Rigney and White hitting over scores of the highest calibre.

But the three goals conceded in the opening half was always going to be impossible to claw back.
