After losing out to Emo NS following a replay last year, St Paul’s Portlaoise made no mistake this time around as they beat St Fiacc’s in the opening game on Tuesday.

St Fiacc’s 1-2

They were wuickly into their stride too, with corner forward Diarmuid Brosnan’s free nestling into the back of the next with just over five minutes gone. St Fiacc’s hit right back though, with their impressive midfielder Toriq Adegoke punched home a goal a minute later.

St Paul’s dominated the rest of the half though, with James Rickard making a strong run through the St Fiacc’s defence to score a great goal after seven minutes. Diarmuid Brosnan and Cathal Duggan scored points to put them 2-2 to 1-0 up, but Adam Kerfah slotted over a nice free to leave St Fiacc’s just four behind at the break.

The second half was dominated by St Paul’s, however, with James Rickard giving them an ideal start with an early goal, his second of the game.

Both teams struggled for scores for the next few minutes, but it was St Paul’s who would strike next, with Rickard completing his hat trick. Gary Saunders then added a point and it was looking like a big mountain to climb for St Fiacc’s.

Thywill Ogunforg added a late point for St Fiacc’s but it was to be St Paul’s day in the end.
