Strong second half seals victory for Timahoe

A strong opening to the second half, scoring 1-4 without reply in the first nine minutes, saw Timahoe secure themselves a semi-final place against St Brigids.

Ladies Football Senior Championship

The opening half was a very well matched affair with both sides kicking 1-7 apiece in the thirty minutes. Timahoe won the throw in and opened the scoring with a free from Martina Dunne after one minute of play. St Conleth’s responded to this with corner forward Michelle Keegan kicking the ball between the posts after good team work and impressive work rate by corner backs Libby Waldron and Nicole Byrne.

Jessie Curley scored the games first goal with 17 minutes on the clock, Maggie Murphy and Angela Casey linking up nicely to set Curley up for the finish. Conleth’s continued to persevere with some excellently struck frees from Claire O’ Connell keeping them in the game and Eva Galvin and Rachel Cullen looked constant threats in the full-forward line.

Conleth’s got their reward for this hard work on the cusp of half time when midfielder Aine Haberlin and Aoife Kirrane put in the ground work for Marie Byrne’s superb goal leaving the sides level at half time.

Timahoe had the dream start to the second half scoring 1-4 without response from the home side in the opening nine minutes. Aisling Quigley found the net after good play by Angela Casey.

St Conleth’s Rachel Cullen scored a cracking goal to keep her side in contention but when Timahoe’s Martina Dunne scored a goal in the 49th minute following Gemma O Connor’s point attempt hit off the post, the hill was too steep for Conleth’s to climb.

Points from Shona Barry and Jessie Curley sealed the deal for Timahoe who topped the group and play St Brigids, while St Conleth’s will meet Sarsfields in the other semi-final fixture. Both will be played on August 24.
