Although the venue might have changed, there was a very familiar feel to Saturday afternoon’s Senior Ladies football decider as Sarsfields and Timahoe squared up to each other for the seventh consecutive year.

Laois Ladies Senior A Final

Timahoe 2-9

Sarsfields 2-8

It was a titanic battle. Timahoe looked much stronger in the opening quarter, Sarsfields looked home and hosed in the last, but in the end it was settled by Martina Dunne’s close range free and Timahoe pinched the trophy from the Sarsfields cabinet at the first time of asking.

After an up and down first half, Sarsfields went to the break a point ahead and after a point and a goal from a penalty early in the second-half, they looked to be in a strong position.

However Timahoe rallied and two goals in a four minute spell got them right back in the game. Maggie Murphy equalised from a soft free a minute later and another Murphy free coupled with Martina Dunne’s neat point left a stunned Sarsfields facing a two point deficit with five to go.

Sarsfieldsgot back on terms through two Tracey Lawlor frees but Timahoe were not to be denied and they broke free and although Shona Barry got her mis-hit shot away a free was awarded for a late foul challenge and Martina Dunne popped the free over the bar to seal the win and round off an amazing game.
