Timahoe through to another final
The more things change, the more they stay the same. St Brigid’s were the new kids on the block in this Laois Ladies SFC semi-final last Sunday night, but it was the traditional powerhouse of Timahoe who booked their place in the county final with an eight point win.
St Brigid’s fought the good fight for as long as they could, and while they have made impressive in-roads into breaking up the dominance of the big two this year, this game was a reminder that they still have work to do.
They trailed by just a point at half time, but the experience of Timahoe came to the fore in the second half, as they stretched their legs and St Brigid’s couldn’t keep pace. The Ballylinana dn Killeen amalgamation were too reliant on scores from placed balls as well, with all bar one of their scores, Aisling Hayden’s goal, coming from either frees or a penalty.
They started brightly though, and were causing TImahoe plenty of problems until two quick fire goals from Jessie Curley and Mo Nerney put them in the driving seat.
Lesser teams would have crumbled at this stage, but St Brigid’s steadied the ship and thanks to an Aisling Hayden goal, brought themselves right back into the game. Points followed from Deirdre O’Shea and Chloe Ryan, and by half time St Brigid’s had brought the gap back to just one point, 1-7 to 2-5.
No doubt the newly formed side took head from their start to the game, but Timahoe knew that they needed to put some daylight between themselves and their opponents in the second half.
St Brigid’s briefly brought the game back level with a Deirdre O’Shea point, but Timahoe came back down the field and scored their third goal, as Mo Nerney applied the finishing touch to raise her second green flag of the day.
Points soon followed from Shona Barry and Nerney, and even though Deirdre O’Shea responded for St Brigid’s, the balance of the game was quickly tipping in Timahoe’s favour. Martin Dunne added another point for them before she then put Sarah Quigley though on goal with just a few minutes remaining, and she made no mistake to round off a well-deserved win for Timahoe, and set up another final showdown with their great rivals Sarsfields.
