U-14 hurlers edged out of Forristal ‘A’ by Cork

Laois v Waterford

Playing with a stiff breeze, Laois started brightly with a Rhian Bergin free followed by a wonderful point from a sideline cut from Aaron Bergin. Another pointed free from Rhian Bergin and a superb point from Robbie Phelan left the teams level at 0-4 each approaching half time.

Laois would be left to rue their scoring opportunities, hitting six wides before Waterford hit them with a goal and a point just before half time to lead by four going into the break. The first ten minutes of the second half was a real battle with Aaron Bergin pointing from a free to leave three between the teams with ten minutes to go. Waterford then hit a five minute purple patch scoring 2-5 to give them a flattering 3-10 to 0-5 victory.

Laois v Cork

Cork started with a strong wind at their backs with their goalkeepers huge puckouts causing the Laois defence all sorts of trouble.

However a well taken point by Robbie Phelan followed by an Aaron Bergin free kept Laois in contention at the break Laois 0-2 Cork 1-6. In the second half with the wind behind them Laois had Cork under severe pressure. Two great long distance frees from Jake Cranny and a well taken goal from Aaron Bergin left two points between the sides with just minutes remaining.

A brilliant last minute goal bound effort by David Connolly was superbly saved by the Cork keeper from which Cork cleared and went up and scored the final point of the match to leave it Laois 1-4 Cork 1-7.

This was an excellent all round performance with all twenty four members of the squad getting game time. This Laois squad have shown they can put it up to any county at the highest level with a very bright future ahead. Special thanks must go to Fran Dowling for the huge effort he put into this team.
