Timahoe’s Tomás Cuddihy set a new national record in the benchpress and deadlift at the Irish Drug Free Powerlifting Association (IDFPA) Single Lift National Championships held in CIT recently.

The event saw 100 lifters from across the country putting in massive lifts in the squat, benchpress and deadlift.

“The standard of lifting was very high and there were great performances across the board,” Tom Coyle, President of the IDFPA said.

One of the big performances of the day saw reigning World Champion Tomás Cuddihy who is originally from Timahoe set new national records with a bench of 152.5kg and a deadlift of 250kg.

A highlight of the competition was James Hickey from Meath pulling a World record deadlift of 335kg on the same day that his brother Austin set a new national record squat of 241kgs.

Next up for the IDFPA will be the Full Power Nationals on March 23rd in Ardee, Louth. The World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation (WDFPF) European Championships will be taking place in Ireland this year from April 26-28 in Castleblayney, Monaghan and a strong Irish team is expected.
