Abbeyleix remain in contention

Abbeyleix U-16 had a great win against Naas in Kilkenny Colleg. This match was an important one in securing Abbeyleix position at the top of the league with one game remaining.

Abbeyleix started the match strongly and by half time they were 2–0 up with goals from Louise Cantwell and Philip Black. Some resolute defending coming up to break by Eliza Nuzum and Pauline Dunne in particular ensured a clean sheet and kept Abbeyleix in control of match.

The moving forward of Louise Cantwell to right mid for this game proved a masterstroke, as together with Susan Sherman and Isobel Black, Abbeyleix dominated the midfield play. Naas held their own through the second half of the match, however Abbeyleix were the stronger of the two on the day and doubled their lead by the end of the match with a second goal from Philip Black and one from Alison Harvey.

Another vital factor in win was Coach Declan Stanley’s regular substitutions and getting best from players before resting. This ploy certainly benefitted the play of Laura Holohan, Alana Phelan and Aimhirgin Byrne. This result sets up a make or break match v Newbridge in Naas with winners likely to be the overall West Leinster champions.

Team: Isabel Black (capt), Eliza Nuzum, Nicole Moynan, Alison Harvey, Kate O’Hara, Alanna Phelan, Ella Barrett, Susan Sherman, Pauline Dunne, Laura Holohan, Fiona O’Connell, Louise Cantwell, Phillip Black, Kate Bell, Aimhirgin Byrne .Coach Declan Stanley and assistant Audrey Holohan

The u14s season has already completed but hope to have a Season End game before end of March.
