Basketball success for Heywood girls

editorial image

On Wednesday, March 6 Heywood Community School’s First Year Girls took on Moate CS of Westmeath. This game proved to be thrilling game, very tight throughout but Heywood emerged victorious by four points.

There was very little to separate the teams at various stages of the game, with both coaches feeling the pressure and using their allocated time-outs efficiently. Emilie McWey, Heywood’s captain, gave an inspiring display of talent as she secured four points for her team in the first quarter.

Entering the second half with a four point lead, Heywood proved superior defensively as strong rebounds came in from Zara Gunner and Lisa McWey in the third-quarter and Eimear Malone and Emily Jacob in the fourth.

Heywood continued to attack in the second half and although scores were hard won they never dropped their heads. Heywood’s win was cemented by their excellent defensive play and their passion to fight for every ball. The team powered to victory with two last quarter baskets by Emily Mulhall, who excelled throughout the game.

Scorers: Emilie McWey (4pts), Emily Mulhall (4pts), Zara Gunner (2pts). Coach: Collette O’Donnell
