Portlaoise Ladies Hockey hosted the final of their Tag Rugby league last Friday at Portlaoise Leisure Centre.

The finals night was a culmination of a six week Tag Rugby league kindly sponsored by Bergin’s Bar Portlaoise, Laois Physio and Kelly’s Pub, Borris in Ossory. The evening kicked off at 6.30 with the semi-final playoffs. On pitch one the Macra Muckers, hot favourites from the outset of the competition, were defeated by the Tag Masters. Then on pitch two the Ballyroan Jagerbombers, who only secured their place in the semi-final on Wednesday, saw off tough competition from the Tag Alongs. These games set the foundation for what was sure to be an edge of your seat final.

After a short break the Ballyroan Jagerbombers and the Tag Masters took to the pitch for the highlight of the evening, the 2012 Portlaoise Tag Rugby final. From very early in the game it was clear that both teams were determined to be champions and tempers became frayed only minutes after the game kicked off. On several occasions referee Susan Fingleton had to interrupt and calm the teams.

In spite of a game filled with drama there were very little scores. In the first half the Tag Masters secured two points after two male tries and probably felt that they had secured a win when they achieved another in the second half to put them three nil up. However a late female try from the Ballyroan Jagerbomers brought the teams level and pushed the game into golden goal extra time. Twice the Tag Masters looked like they would take the game after carrying the ball over the try line only to fumble and knock on the ball before grounding it. These ball handling errors combined with a selection of injuries gave the Ballyroan Jagerbombers the opportunity to break away and score the winning try and the title.

Another title up for grabs on the night was that of ‘wooden spoon’ champion. The contenders for this title were the Victims and Pick N Mix who finished bottom of the table after the 6 week league. However after a hard fought battle it was the aptly named Victims who were crowned with the ‘wooden spoon’ title. After a stressful evening all the teams were then able to kick back and enjoy a barbequed feast provided by Portlaoise Hockey Club and Bergin’s Bar Portlaoise.
