Charity cycle to take place this weekend

The second annual ‘Lap Of Laois’ cycling sportive, run by the Watchtours Cycling Club in aid the children’s charity The Make Believers, will take place this Sunday, March 24.

The lap will take in two routes consisting of 60km and 120km. With 200 cyclists taking part in our first sportive last year, we can only hope for the sunshine that graced us back then to help break that number this year, with the registration beginning at 8.30am at the new Portlaoise GAA pitches in Rathleague at a cost of 25euro per cyclists, payable on the day with both cycles starting at 9.30am.

The routes can be viewed on Facebook on the Watchtours page or on Boards.ie by searching the ‘Lap Of Laois’. A food stop will take place in The Rock GAA club for both cycles and a nice hot meal is available for everyone at the end of the cycle with a big thank you to Bernie Conroy from the Laois Injury Clinic who has made himself available to massage any of those tired legs after the cycles. Of course the most important thing on the day is raising money for such a worthy charity

The Make Believers is a registered children’s charity that brings the real Santa to Durrow, Co Laois every December where he and his North Pole team meet some very special guests. The Make Believers work with paediatric staff in Portlaoise, Crumlin, Kilkenny, Ballinasloe and Limerick hospitals to identify children who are coping with terminal and long term illness, disability, social disadvantage and emotional trauma.

In 2010 we also had guests nominated by the Central Remedial Clinic, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Jack and Jill, Anam Cara amd Hydrocephalus Spina Bifida Ireland.

In December 2009 and 2010, Santa met almost 200 families who are coping with extraordinary circumstances. The magic is that this Santa knows everything about each little boy and girl he meets - just as Santa should! Of course this is because he is the real Santa and because The Make Believers work a little magic. We hope to see you all there for a great days cycling.
