Comfortable win for U-18s

The Portlaoise boy’s U-18 team travelled to play Tramore in the Kilkenny Area League Competition.

Portlaoise started the better with early baskets from Benny Carroll and Mark Bartley. As the game went on both teams were playing well, exchanging baskets, Liam Goodwin and Fionn Kenneally got scores for Tramore while Kyle Burke and Mark Bartley replied for Portlaoise to see the teams level.

The second quarter saw good performances from both teams, Sean Colter and Sean Smith put in good work for Tramore while Liam Campbell and Alan Murphy showed well for Portlaoise.

As the quarter went on there was nothing between the teams, Alan Murphy and Mark Bartley scored for Portlaoise while James Carroll and Sean Colter replied for Tramore to edge them out in front at the break.

The second half saw Portlaoise up the tempo with a full court press that resulted in turnovers and fine scores from Liam Campbell and Jack Dooley.

Tramore despite a time out could not cope with the press and gave up too much possession, which resulted in Portlaoise opening up a ten point lead. In hindsight this was the quarter that the game was won and lost with Jack Dooley and Liam Campbell finishing off good work from their teammates.

The last quarter saw Portlaoise control the game with good movement of the ball resulting in baskets from Kyle Burke and Mark Bartley who was eventually to be top scorer of the game with an excellent 14 points.

As the game came to a close Portlaoise had good performances from Hugh Hackett and Brendan Carroll to help their team go on to a well deserved win that sees them remain at the top of the Kilkenny Area League table.

Portlaoise Team: Jack Dooley, James Dunne, Kyle Burke, Liam Campbell, Mark Bartley, Alan Murphy, Tiernan Dempsey, Brendan Carroll, Hugh Hackett, Dusan Rabat, Robert McSweeney. Coach: Jack Scully.
