Coppers on course for top four finish
Team Coppers went into this weekend knowing that two wins would set them up nicely for a top four spot, and they took on BC Svyturys on Friday night in what was a highly anticipated match. In the first match between the sides before Christmas, BC Svyturys won on a scoreline of 103-96.
MENS MIDLANDS LEAGUE DIVISION 1
Team Coppers 81
BC Svyturys 75
The game started at a hectic pace, each team pushed the ball at every opportunity. It was obvious from the start that if Coppers were going to win they needed to keep the pace of the game at a high level and tire out there opponents.
Coppers scored twenty-two points in the first quarter with Craig and Jack Scully combining for thirteen of these points. Denis Curtin and Chris Higgins again proved they’re a match for anyone in the league; they worked tirelessly at the top of the arc.
This resulted in Denis Curtin finishing off some fine moves with a personal tally of six points in the quarter. Also on the score board in the quarter was Jamie Dooley. BC Svyturys have showed all year long that they are a lethal outside shooting team. They scored 20 points in the first quarter, 12 of them coming from beyond the arc. Coppers led at the end of the first quarter 22-20.
As the second quarter got underway Coppers pushed the ball inside and this resulted in some of BC Svtyurys main players getting in foul trouble. Again the Scully brothers combined for 13 points in the quarter, punishing Svytury’s indiscipline from the line.
The introduction of David Glynn and Jack Dooley in the quarter showed the strength and depth in the Coppers squad. Glynn was driving hard and giving some super lay offs with Denis Curtin the beneficiary adding another three baskets. Again BC Svyturys were hurting Coppers from the three point line closing the gap to within one score. The first half ended with Coppers leading 41- 39.
The third quarter was again another tight affair with Coppers showing their main threat was a fast high paced game. Evan Maher, Chris Higgins and Denis Curtin pushed the ball at a hectic pace and BC Svyturys were not able to handle the raw speed and fitness of the Coppers outfit.
This resulted in them picking up a lot of personal fouls and Coppers have showed in recent weeks how important free throws are again hitting twenty of them in this game. Notching up the scores in this quarter was Jack and Craig Scully, Chris Higgins, David Glynn and Denis Curtin. The quarter ended with Coppers leading 60-55.
The fourth quarter began and it became evident that the team that kept their cool would come out on top. BC Svyturys kept fouling and eventually they started losing players, they had four players fouled off in this game and ended up with 3 players on the court.
Coppers continued punishing them from the free throw line. Craig Scully had ten points in this quarter bringing his personal tally to twenty-five points and fifteen rebounds putting in an MVP performance. Coppers ran out 81-75 winners which is a huge win for the lads as they will be fighting hard against the teams around them such as BC Svyturys. After beating Old Leighlin last week the boys are right up there at the right end of the table.
