Fun for all at Mountmellick Sports Camp

The Owenass Active Living Group held a very successful multi-activity sports camp at the Owenass Hall in Mountmellick recently.

Ages participating in the camp ranged from 2 years old to 12 years old. The event was a great success and included a number of ‘special events’:

There was an introduction to Kickboxing provided by Laois Martial Artist and All Ireland Champion Shane Culleton.

An introduction to Olympic Handball was provided by NGB Irish Olympic Handball Association. This is the first such event held in Laois.

Provided by Mountmellick Gymnastics Club, the introduction to gymnastics proved very popular. It was coached by Stanislav Sevostyanov, Head Coach at Excel Gymnastic, Celbridge and coach to the Irish National Women’s Gymnastics Team.

All coaching provided by Laois Martial Arts, the Irish Olympic Handball Association and Mountmellick Gymnastics Club was provided free of charge to the Owenass Active Living Group to promote participation in sport.

Other sports introduced during the camp included basketball, volleyball, badminton. No child that attended the camp has previously experienced more than one of these sports.

A young volunteer, Lorraine McEvoy, a member of the Kestrel Basketball club in Portarlington coached the children in basketball.

The Owenass Active Living Group was set up earlier this year by a number of groups/clubs that use the Owenass Hall in Mountmellick. The objectives of the OALG are to increase participation in sport by all age groups through giving access to a range of sports not currently available locally. To fundraise to renovate the Owenass Hall and help ensure that community facilities and community groups / clubs and survive and flourish in a time of high tech, state of the art sports facility and well funded clubs.
