Gee inspires Ballyroan to finals success

editorial image

This years Division 2 womens final was made up of two local teams, Portlaoise Panthers and Ballyroan Mavericks. This was Mavericks second year in a row to reach the final of the Division 2 Top 4. Ballyroan defeated Kildare side rathangan in the first game of the weekend on Friday evening in St. Mary’s Hall. Portlaoise Panthers met league winners Killeen on Saturday afternoon and came out winners by a single basket.

Sunday morning’s first final of the day proved to be a very exciting game which was just as hard to call as every other meeting between these two sides. With both sides fighting for Top 4 victory, it was Ballyroan Mavericks who came out on top in this years competition. The game set the bar for the rest of the finals with support for both teams adding excitement to this already highly anticipated match. The sides were level for most of the game however the last quarter belonged to Ballyroan Mavericks as they widened the gap and claimed victory as the final buzzer went.

The game had all that a local derby should have, passion and emotion, with both teams playing some of the best basketball of the weekend. A major turning point in the game was the loss of Panthers centre Anna Fraser at the end of the third quarter as she picked up her fifth foul. Up until this the sides were level, but an excellent fourth quarter from the Ballyroan ladies gave them the title. There was some stand out performances from both sides with Leanne Hayes lighting the place up from the three point line in the first half while Karen Curley and Cathy Hayes clocked up important scores for Ballyroan Mavericks. But the experience of Lorraine Gee played a major part in Ballyroan’s victory scoring three important baskets to push her side over the finish line.

A huge congratulations to Mavericks in their top 4 success and to Lorraine Gee on being named MVP for Division 2 Ladies final. Also well done to all teams who made it to the finals weekend and thanks to all who made it a huge success.
