The 11th Annual de Vesci Salver competition was held recently at Abbeyleix Tennis Club and new names will be inscribed on the Salver.

The Aileen Luttrell/ Cormac Sheedy combination winning out over the Simon White/Eliza Nuzum duo in a pulsating final.

The 6 – 5 score line in a short set reflecting the closeness of the match as the hard hitting Aileen and subtlety of Cormac just about deserving victory having come from 5 – 3 down. Beaten semi finalists were David Brophy/Aoife Hosey and Philip Nash/Rachel Cass.

The de Vesci salver was presented to the club in 2002 by Lord Tom de Vesci as a perpetual trophy for an adult junior competition to be held each year. It is very much centred on a family event and has grown to be one of the major Club competitions in the clubs calendar. Unfortunately Tom de Vesci could not attend this year’s event due to business commitments but sent on his best wishes for the evening.

The club had a BBQ which was followed by the presentation of prizes to the winners and runners up.

Thanks to all those involved in the organising, particularly Liam, Oonagh, Michelle, for the catering and to Leisa, and the court referees. The junior committee also played their part especially, Edmund, Michael & Aoife. On the evidence of the nights play, the future of Abbeyleix Tennis club is in good hands and we can look forward to a very bright future.
