Home victory for ladies over Kildare

Last Thursday night saw Portlaoise Panthers Ladies Division 2 team play their first home game of the season against Kildare Gliders. Gliders have only joined the midland league this season and Portloaise proved to be too strong for their opposition.

Gliders opened up the game with a basket off the first offence, however their lead was short lived with Portlaoise scoring strong inside through Anna Fraizer and Grace Delaney. Great work from the Colohan sisters saw Panthers widen the gap even further between the sides.

Excellent defence by Regan kept the visitors from scoring and saw her following it up with some great baskets on the fast break. A switch of players from the home side saw Danielle Keane add her name to the score sheet with a wonderful three point shot and in defence the introduction of Aoife Brennan made sure that Panthers clearedtheir own boards. At the end of the first quarter Portlaoise led 20-8.

The second quarter saw a similar team performance from Portlaoise. Impressive teamwork again between Donna Colohan and Grace Delaney saw the home team push the gap between both sides further apart. Delaney spent time on the free throw line in this quarter as most of her offensive rebounds resulted in fouls.

The third quarter saw strong defensive play and great vision from Amy Dunphy who assisted in a great opening basket by Rebecca Kelly. The Colohan sisters and Grace Delaney continued to work hard in defence while adding scores with their precision driving to the board.

In the final quarter we saw more impressive defence from Amy Dunphy and Rebecca Kelly who worked well together. Anna Fraizer and Aoife Brennan continued to crash the boards and this allowed Portlaoise to maintain possession and saw Portlaoise winning by an impressive double figure margin.

Portlaoise Panthers Team: Emma Colohan, Donna Colohan, Grace Delaney, Aoife Brennan, Sharon Regan, Amy Dunphy, Danielle Keane, Niamh Sweeney, Anna Fraizer, Rebecca Kelly, Edel Gilligan. Coach: Jack Scully.
