Horseshoe top memorable Laois Pool League
The first running of the new league began in early 2012 and after a lot of organisation to get the league off the ground it finally kicked off in April with the start of the brand new league season.
After the group stages of the league commenced, it was down to the business end of the league when the playoffs took place. Both the Cup and Shield Finals were played at Napper Tandy’s on two brand new top of the range supreme winner pool tables specially fitted for the day and all credit to Brendan Lynch for putting on a great spread. The Shield finals kicked off first on Table 1 which proved to be a good quality final but it was Napper’s B team who pulled away and took the 2012 Shield title on a score line of 13-4.
In the cup final, a top standard of pool was on show for the spectators that were there as both The Horseshoe and Ryan’s A proved to be very well matched. After The Horseshoe went 12-8 up with only one frame needed for victory, the mighty Ryan’s A team came right back at them to bring the score to 12-10 but it was The Horseshoe captain, Anthony Quinlan who sunk the black to win the match 13-10 and take the Cup and title of Laois Pub Pool Champions to Abbeyleix.
Overall it has been a great first year for the league and players are already looking forward to the new season which kicks off in late February / early march. Hopefully we will see plenty of new teams competing along with all the current ones.
Prior to the league kicking off there will be an AGM held in early February and at least two players from each team entering will be required to attend.
Entries into the Christmas Pub Team Challenge are now been taking and any current Pub team which competed in the Laois Pub Pool League this year are encouraged to participate as it is a great opportunity for each pub to get their players back on the baize in practice for the 2013 season.
A few new teams have entered the Pub Challenge already and it is especially encouraged that any pub who is not already in the league but wishes to compete should put forth a team into the Challenge games to gain a feel for the format and rules which the league uses so it is a great chance for all teams, current and new to trial new players in preparation for the 2013 league .
There will be no entry fee into the Pub Challenge and the same format as used earlier in the league will be employed with the exception that teams need only at least five players but can include up to three subs on their panel. Also teams will be able to use new players for each challenge game in order to allow them to trial players if they wish. The first five team entries received will be put into a group in which they will play each other home and away.
