Laois athletes shine at Inter-Varsities

A number of Laois athletes were on show last weekend at the Inter-Varsity Indoor Track and Field Championships last week in the new facilities in Athlone Institute of Tecnology (AIT) with no less than four Laois athletes on display.

Representing their respective colleges, the Laois athletes fared well over the course of the day with St Abbans’ Brian Kelly leading the medal charge. The DCU student competed in the 800m Men’s competition and won his semi-final heat, before progressing to the final where he crossed the line in third place to claim the bronze medal.

Competing in the 3000m Men’s was Kelly’s St Abbans’ and DCU teammate, Stephen Lawler, who came third in sem-final heat before going on to secure a seventh place finish in the final. Completeing the St Abban’s, DCU and Laois trio was Francis Egan who finished in seventh position in the Men’s Triple Jump final.

Another Laois athlete on show was IT Carlow’s Alan Whelan. A native of The Heath, Whelan competed in the Men’s 60m, finishing third in his semi-final heat but failing to qualify for a spot in the final. Whelan finished the day with a ninth place finish in the final of the Men’s 4x200m Relay.

DCU topped the points board with final tally of 105, with their closest competitors coming in some way short with 54 points.

In the Inter-Women’s race with Portlaoise AC’s Paula Grant, Sharon Gant, and Ruth Hodgins all finishing in the first twenty home. Laois’ Grace McDonnell was on also in fine form as she crossed the line to finish seventeenth.
