The Deadman’s Dash 7k
Last week Ballyfin AC along with the support of the Deadman’s Inn launched The Deadman’s Dash 7k on their Facebook page. It is our first organised road race and we look forward to greeting runners of all levels on the day.
The Deadman’s Dash 7k will take place on Sunday 21st April 2013 at 12 Noon, starting and finishing outside the Deadmans Inn with Prizes for the First 5 Senior Men and Women of €100, €80, €60, €40 and €20.
There will also be a 1k kidsDASH at 11.15am prior to the main race, each child will receive a medal for taking part. Registration is €15 and can be done on the day from 10.00am in the Deadmans Inn or register online at www.runireland.com, look for it under Events Calendar.
Registration for students will be €5, only on the day. The is also a €2 entry fee for the kidsDASH, only on the day.
Refreshments and prize-giving will take place afterwards at the Deadman’s Inn including spot prizes for all taking part. AAI Permit Granted.

Monday Nights - Indoor Training
Indoor Training takes place at the Ballyfin Community Hall every Monday from 6.30 to 7.30. There will be a cool “Little Athletics” training programme for children aged 5-9. This age group has been identified as the FUNdamental stage in the long term physical development of the child, and the development of fundamental skills such as agility, co-ordination and balance will contribute greatly to future sporting achievements. Why not get along and give it a go! Contact Ger Goode on 083-1077421. Children from the age of 5 welcome, €2 per child and max €5 per family.
Friday nights Indoor/Outdoor Training
Friday night training, for children over five years of age, takes place at the Treo Nua Community Centre in Portlaoise on Harpurs Lane (across from entrance to the Portlaoise Running Track) from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. It consists of a mixture of indoor/outdoor training (weather dependent).
Adult Training for all levels takes place every Sunday in Emo Court at 10.30am with runners meeting up in the car park, and with the days closing in its every Tuesday and Thursday evening in Portlaoise meeting in St Fintans car park across from the prison at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome so why not dust off those trainers, come along and get active!
Get fit with the Ballyfin AC Ladies
Following on from our first Womens Team taking part in the Laois Cross Country Championship in Emo – we want to keep the momentum going! With the short evenings it can be difficult but why not contact Ger Goode on 083-1077421 and she can give out details on where the girls meet up. So why not get out and get up and running.

Ballyroan Abbeyleix and District
There is training Cullahill GAA Grounds at 7pm each Monday evening. There will be a group run in Cullenagh each Monday evening at 7pm. This is an easy run on hills.
There is training each Tuesday evening at 7.30pm at Ballyroan GAA grounds.
Anybody with an interest in athletics/general fitness regardless of age or experience is most welcome. All levels of fitness are catered for. We would encourage and welcome parents especially to bring their children and maybe even participate with them in becoming fit for life. Training continues every Monday evening 6.45pm to 7.45pm €1 and Friday evenings 7pm to 8pm for those athletes ten years and over wishing to take their training to the next level. Some of our athletes are preparing for the Leinster Indoor champioships which are on 9th and 10th March in Athlone. Over the past weeks we have had specified training sessions preparing the athletes, ie Highjump sessions, Hurdle sessions, Shot putt and we hope to do Longjump too before the indoors. We have also concentrated on speed training and middle distance running in order to prepare the athletes for their sprint events, 600m and 800m distances etc. Congratulations to David Keenan and Grace Balfe who recently completed a six-month Level 2 coaching course with AAI. They look forward to passing their new found knowledge on to the athletes. Everybody attending athletics should be registered at this stage if you have not yet done so we will insist that you do not attend training until club reg fee is paid we will be implimenting this from March onwards, as already mentioned you can pay in installments please talk to Grace Balfe or Mary Keegan. The club would like to wish all of our large contingent of athletes the best of luck when they compete in the Leinster indoor championships next weekend. They have all been very busy over the winter months training three times a week and are all looking forward to the competitive season ahead. We hope you all enjoy the wonderful new indoor track facilities in Athlone.
Well done to all of our athletes who recently competed in the community games cross country trials in Stradbally. They will now compete in the cross country community games national relay finals also in Athlone.
Juvenile training continues on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7pm in Vicarstown and on Saturday mornings in Oakvale woods at 10:30 am.
Streets of Portlaoise 5k
Now that March is here, training is well underway for our upcoming St. Patrick’s Day Road Race. Entries are flowing in for the annual Streets of Portlaoise 5k: (incorporating a Juvenile 1k at 11am) in association with The Heritage Health and Fitness Club on Sunday 17th March. This year promises to be our biggest yet, with the seasoned runners joined by dozens of ‘Couch to 5k’ runners ready to embark on their first road race. Advance registration online at runireland.com. Registration on the day is from 9-11am at the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise. (Changing Facilities/Refreshments and Prize giving in the hotel after the race). The race will start at Main Street Portlaoise commencing at 11.30am. There will be Chip Timing. Prizes for first five senior men and women (€200, €150, €130, €115, €100). Top Master in the following Categories, M40, M45, M50, W35, W40, W45. €50. There will be €100 bonus for breaking the course records: Men 14.52, Women 17.00.There will also be prizes in underage categories. All-Ireland Inter Club Cross Country
Inter Club Cross Country
Harry Lupton was our only competitor in the All Ireland Inter Club Cross Country Championships, held in the grounds of Charleville Castle last weekend. Harry had a fantastic run, finishing in 33rd position in a top class field. While Harry was running in Tullamore, his brother Tom and Brian Madden were running in England, and both recorded new PBs over the five mile race. Well done, lads!
Congratulations to our ladies who have gone from strength to strength in the distance races lately. Paula Grant was first in the BHAA two mile race at ALSAA last Saturday. Sharon Grant was third, while Pamela Power was first in her category. Great running, ladies! And the same ladies were out coaching the ‘Couch to 5k’ on Tuesday!
Couch to 5k
The couch to 5k programme continues each Tuesday at 6pm. Congratulations to all of you who made the tough decision to leave the couch seven weeks ago. The improvements you have made are amazing, and in just a few weeks you will be completing your first 5k race. It’s wonderful to see so many people sticking with the programme. Last week many of the participants had a run over the course, and that will give everyone tremendous confidence in approaching the race. We look forward to working with everyone over the remaining weeks to help them achieve their fitness goals and complete the Streets of Portlaoise 5k Road Rrace on St. Patrick’s Day. Information will be posted on Portlaoise AC facebook page and StreetsofPortlaoise facebook page. A huge thank you to all the coaches and helpers who continue to give their time voluntarily.
Seniors - Tuesday and Thursday 7pm at track. Saturday in Oakvale, meet at 10.45, run at 11.00. Sunday in Emo, Meet at 10.15, run at 10.30 sharp. Juveniles - Tuesday and Thursday 7pm at track for sprints, long jump, hurdles, distance. Sunday 10.15am at Emo for 11yrs and Throws: Shot Putt 6pm Tuesdays at track. Hammer, Discus: Sundays 11am St Fintan’s field.
A training course in the use of the defibrillator will take place in the clubhouse on Thursday evening next the 7th March at 7.30pm. It would be nice to have a couple from all sections of the club to be up-to-date in the use of the equipment, alongwith any locals that wish to be proficient. Anyone interested in attending please fill in your name and phone number on the sheet in the clubhouse asap.
Dineen’s Primary Schools
The annual ‘Dineen’ sponsored primary schools table quiz is ready for the final with two fantastic semi-final nights. Many thanks to all the teachers and parents for the fantastic turnout and best wishes to all in the final where another close run battle is anticipated.
The last of the Leinster indoor championships take place in Athlone IT International Arena over the weekend of the 9th and 10th March. Best wishes extended to all club members taking part.
Senior Road Races
The club are hosting the Laois senior road championships kindly sponsored by Ben Brennan on the Turra triangle on the 24th March at 12.00 - another local promotion where no doubt some club members will be to the fore.
Best wishes extended to those who have made the trip to the new indoor arena in Glasgow for the Scottish indoor championships which are on this weekend.
In order to avoid a clash with other scheduled events the M3 Monavea Women’s Mini Marathon has been fixed for the 26th May at 1pm which is the week before the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon and an ideal warmup beforehand. So all the ladies have 3 months to prepare for the event, why not establish a friend or two and get together two or three times a week. Several people are using the track at various times during the day so you’re likely to meet up with someone if you venture down there. Also, the Fit4Life programme as usual is on Mondays and Wednesdays evenings at 7.30pm if that suits better. We would like to encourage as many walkers and joggers as possible to include it in their programme and look forward to meeting everyone on the day.
Good Friday 5k
The St Michael’s AC Good Friday run will be held at the Heritage Golf and Spa Resort Killenard on 29th of March. The fun run starts at 6:30pm and is AAI approved. Entry only €10. Great spot prizes and cash for first Man and Woman.
Adult Circuit training takes place indoors every Friday evening at 7pm. Venue GAA Centre Portarlington. There is a great response to this training only 3 euro for the circuit training session. All welcome. Circuit training is the most time efficient way to enhance cardiovascular fitness and muscle endurance.
Senior Training takes place every Tuesday and Friday in McCann park Portarlington at 7pm. Tuesday evening session is €2. The Friday night is a circuit training based session it targets strength building and endurance. John Fenlon leads the circuit training. The Circuit training will take place indoors, beginners are welcome.
