Laois in the medals again

editorial image

Kate Whelan and Leanne Delaney led the way as players from Co Laois clubs scooped a treasure trove of trophies at this seasons opener in Leinster ranking events in Dublin.

Delaney produced her finest performance to date in capturing the U-12 Girls event with an excelent 3-2 win over Chinese wizzard Jacki Sui in the final. Her clubmate Tadhg Downey was also hitting all the right notes untill he came up against his opponent from Moldova in the U-12 final, and while Tadhg produced an excelent performance, his opponent was simply a class act who also went on to win U-14 boys.

Many other Mountrath players enjoyed top class performances as the club collected 12 top three results over the two day event, with some having double results including Scott Jestin in U-17, Jessie Hayes third U-12, Tiegan O’Connor and Katie Hayes. Kate Whelan of Ballyroan continues to shine with ever consistent high level performances, and this occasion was no different as she cruised to a 3-0 victory over Nga Guygen in the U-14 final. She also went on to take second in U-17 in a closely contested event.

Jack Carroll also from Ballyroan continues to make steady progress as he took third in U-10 boys, while Rathdowney’s Claire Handcock continues to make consistent headway and duly collected top spot in U-12 Division 2. A number of players also collected awards as Provincial Player of the Year for 2011/12. These included Tadhg Downey U-11 Boys, Jessie Hayes U-11 Girls, Kate Whelan U-12 Girls, Scott Jestin U-13 Boys and Amylou Hayes U-14 Girls.
