Laois primary schools invited to enter Leinster tennis league

The 2013 Tretorn Junior and Primary Schools Tennis League kicks off shortly, and all Primary Schools in Leinster are invited to take part.

Leinster Tennis, the sports provincial governing body, organizes the competition, which is run as a team round robin event. According to Rosa Stephens of Leinster Tennis, “our objective with the Schools League is to encourage as many children as possible to get involved in tennis from a young age, and remain involved in their school or club tennis programme.”

Tennis is widely recognized as one of the healthiest sports young people can take up. It’s a non-contact sport that can be played in a team format, and a lot of calories are burnt with every hour spent on the court.

One of the games foremost experts, Dr. Mark Kovacs, has written that, “playing tennis consistently is linked to greater longevity, less sickness and better overall health compared to lighter forms of exercise”, while “inactive kids score up to 40% lower on (academic) achievement tests than their active friends”.

Leinster Tennis is keen to point out that it is not necessary for a school to have tennis courts on its grounds to enter the Tretorn League. Local tennis clubs or public parks with courts will be keen to host school teams for this annual event, now in its 22nd year.

Rosa Stephens remarked, “Last years Leagues were a great success. This year we are delighted to have on board Tretorn, one of the world’s top tennis ball manufacturers, as our sponsor. This will help make the competition even bigger and better than before, and allow us to offer excellent prizes.”

Entries must be in by Friday, February 15, and full details can be found at www.leinstertennis.ie. Will your school be among those competing on finals day for the title of Tretorn Primary School League Tennis Champions?
