Laois Musical society all ready for the Carers 10k

Laois Musical society all ready for the Carers 10k

The Carers Association’s Laois 10K Mini Marathon 2012 took place last Sunday in Portalaoise. It was a huge success with over 250 people taking part from far and wide. Each participant received a medal and a well deserved cuppa tea and sandwich at the finish line and the winners were presented with fantastic prizes which were donated by Colgan Sports the Sponsors of the event.

The Mayor of Portlaoise Ms. Catherine Fitzgerald started the race and said she was delighted to be associated with the event which highlighted the work that the Carers Association are carrying out for Family Carers in Laois. She also pointed out that other groups such as Down Syndrome Laois, LOFFA, Guide dogs for the Blind and the Portlaoise Musical Society used this event to raise much needed funds this year and she encouraged all groups needing to fundraise to sustain services, to get involved next year.

Annette McCaul Fundraising Manager and Event Co-ordinator for the Carers Association said “Family Carers never needed support before as much as they do now particularly in light of proposed funding cuts which will have a devastating effect on the lives of Family Carers making it increasingly more difficult to care for their loved ones at home. Fundraising has become even more necessary to supplement allocated funding to sustain services and this wouldn’t be possible without local support. We would like to thank our Sponsor Colgan Sports, the Leinster Express, Laois Sports Partnership, Town Council, local Gardai from the Traffic Corps unit, Red Cross, St. Joseph’s Accordeon Band, the Maldron Hotel and all the volunteers who marshalled the route, water tables and registration”

The event was time chipped and the official results are available on www.carersireland.com or www.runireland.com
