Mountmellick’s marathon man launches new Midlands event
THE Midlands Half Marathon, organised by Mountmellick native Brian Holohan is fast approaching, and after securing Asics as the main sponsors for the event, it’s all systems go for this exciting new event.
Taking place on the Bank Holiday Monday, August 1, it’s hoped that it will become an important date in the calendar of both aspiring and seasoned running enthusiasts.
Brian outlined the hopes he has for the inaugural event.
“Laois has so many things going for it when it comes to this kind of thing. It’s central location, good transport links and the scenic routes on offer all make Laois a perfect spot for a running event like this.”
The proposed route for the event uses the Rock of Dunamase as a focal point, and Brian ran the course himself last week to get a feel for what the large number of those already registered can expect.
‘It’s a good route, one that will cater for all levels and that’s important considering we have a large number of people who intend on walking rather than running. People of all ages, abilities and experience will enjoy it,” he added.
“One good thing might have come from the recent recession. People tend to get back to basics in times like this. The same happened in the 80’s, where there was a similar upsurge in fitness and running.
“Getting Asics on board was a huge step for us. Having never sponsored a race of any kind in Ireland before, they saw something in our idea and were delighted to give us their backing,” Holohan said.
Being an athletics enthusiast himself, he ran his fair share of poorly-organised events, and identified a gap in the market for his home county to exploit, and he hopes the Midlands Half Marathon will grow in popularity year on year, bringing benefits not only to those who take part, but the county as whole.
The half marathon has already attracted a high volume of entrants, with many more expected to sign up in the coming weeks. To enter, simply log on to the official web page and get training.
