The Portlaoise boys U-12 basketball team played host to Kilkenny in the Kilkenny Area League.

Kilkenny came out the stronger in the first couple of minutes taking an early lead with good shooting from Cathal Mulhall.

Portlaoise were slow to get to the pace of the game despite good work from Stephen Mc Cabe and Darren Moore they found themselves down by four points at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter Portlaoise upped the tempo of the game with strong defence and were rewarded with baskets from Rian O Connell and their Captain Dylan Phelan.

As the game went on Portlaoise were dominating on the floor and more importantly on the scoreboard with fine scores from James Phelan and James Connolly to help their team take a 10-point lead into the halftime break.

The second half continued with both teams playing well, exchanging baskets, Rory Hogan and Tommy Rafter put in good work for Kilkenny while Ben O Reilly and Colm Byrne showed well for the home club.

As the quarter went on Portlaoise were now in control of the game thanks to baskets from Stephen Mc Cabe and Darren Moore. The last quarter saw Portlaoise continue to dominate with good movement of the ball resulting in fine baskets from their ball handler Dylan Phelan and their big man Rian O Connell who was eventually to be top scorer of the game with an excellent 14 points.

Kilkenny to their credit never gave up battling for every ball but it was the bigger and stronger Portlaoise team thanks to good work from James Phelan and Sam Wynne who went on to a well deserved win that sees them remain at the top of the Kilkenny league table.
